How to use AI referral analytics
AI referral analytics connects your website's Google Analytics 4 property to the AI Visibility dashboard. It shows which supported AI assistants send sessions, GA4 key events, and revenue to your landing pages. The report covers the latest 30 calendar days and is available on paid plans.
Before you connect GA4
- Google Analytics 4 must already be collecting data for the website.
- Your Google account must have access to the correct GA4 property.
- Configure important actions as GA4 key events if you want them to appear as conversions.
- Send purchase or subscription revenue to GA4 if you want the Revenue column to contain values.
How to connect Google Analytics 4
- Open your projects, then open the website you want to measure.
- Open AI Visibility from the website tools.
- Scroll to AI referral analytics and click Connect GA4.
- Choose the Google account that has access to the website's GA4 property.
- Approve the read-only Google Analytics permission.
- Select the correct GA4 property and click Save property.
If the Google account can access only one GA4 property, 2-UA selects it automatically. You can change the selected property later from the same dashboard block.
Which AI sources are included?
The source report recognizes referral traffic attributed by GA4 to:
- ChatGPT —
chatgpt.comandchat.openai.com - Perplexity —
perplexity.aiandperplexity.com - Gemini —
gemini.google.comand the legacybard.google.comsource - Copilot —
copilot.microsoft.com
The report uses the GA4 session source. A visit cannot appear as AI referral traffic when the browser, assistant, redirect, or consent setup removes the referrer and no source parameter reaches GA4.
How to read the report
- AI traffic
- The number of GA4 sessions that started from a supported AI source.
- Conversions
- The number of GA4 key events attributed to those source and landing-page rows.
- Revenue
- Total revenue reported by GA4 in the property's currency.
- AI landing pages
- The first page and query string recorded for each AI referral session.
How prompt-to-conversion matching works
GA4 does not provide the text of the prompt that caused a visit. 2-UA shows a prompt path only when it can match two independent observations:
- A saved ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity answer contains a citation to your website.
- The citation path matches a GA4 AI referral landing-page path.
- The saved answer engine matches the GA4 AI source.
Query parameters and a trailing slash do not prevent a path match. Copilot traffic appears in source and landing-page reports, but it cannot be connected to a prompt because Copilot is not currently a tracked answer engine.
Why does the report show no traffic?
- Confirm that the selected GA4 property belongs to this website.
- Check that GA4 is receiving sessions for the website and selected period.
- Allow time for GA4 processing; very recent visits may not appear immediately.
- Check the session source in GA4. Traffic without a supported AI source is intentionally excluded.
- Try a 2-UA AI Visibility measurement so the product has saved citations to match against landing pages.
Why are conversions or revenue zero?
Sessions can be present even when conversions and revenue are zero. Mark the required GA4 events as key events, and make sure revenue events include valid currency and value data. 2-UA reads GA4 reporting data; it does not create conversion events or calculate revenue itself.
Why can I not find the correct property?
Reconnect with a Google account that has access to the property. If access was granted recently, sign out of the consent flow and connect again. Contact support if the property is visible in GA4 but still absent from the selector.
What access does 2-UA receive?
2-UA requests the analytics.readonly permission. It cannot edit your GA4 property, events,
audiences, or settings. OAuth credentials are encrypted at rest, and report rows are requested on demand
instead of being copied into the 2-UA database.
How do I disconnect?
Open the AI referral analytics block and click Disconnect. The saved GA4 credentials and property selection are deleted immediately. Disconnecting GA4 does not delete your AI Visibility prompts, answers, or citation history.
